Backpacking (CARE)

Visitors can also camp in the backcountry with a free permit (available at the visitor center). There are nice backpacking opportunities throughout the park’s 100-mile length, but Upper and Lower Muley Twist Canyon Trails are two of the best destinations. They are located in the southern region near Burr Trail Switchbacks.

Other Activities (CARE)

Biking is allowed, but only on designated roads. The 10 mile stretch of Scenic Drive south of the visitor center is the most popular section of roadway. It’s narrow, without shoulders, and crowded with motorists between April and October. If you plan on pedalling Scenic Drive you must be alert at all times and proceed with caution. Mountain bikers can take on more strenuous routes like Cathedral Valley Loop, South Draw Road, or Burr Trail Road/Notom – Bullfrog Road.

Rock Climbing is gaining popularity. Permits are not required, but first-timers should join someone familiar with the area or purchase a dedicated climbing guide book (available at the visitor center), because much of the rock is brittle sandstone.

Stock (horse, mule, and burro) are allowed in the park. However, no outfitters provide guided trail rides and you must trailer your own stock in. Recommended rides include South Draw, Old Wagon Trail, Halls Creek, and the South Desert.
